Teamwork

One of the critical elements of chemotherapy is teamwork. We’re not in this alone. Your medical care team is critical and an important element of your treatment. They’re not only there to administer and monitor your chemo, they’re a primary source of encouragement and support.

In addition, your care team is your emotional support team. This is where the teamwork is especially critical. Days when we struggle, question our progress, and feel like poo are many. Being able to rely on a team of friends and loved ones to help keep your spirits up, listen when you need to talk, and physically support you when you’re weak, is just as important to your recovery as is your medical team.

Teamwork can also involve various cancer support groups. Talking with people who are going or have gone through the same experience as you can be helpful and reassuring.

If possible, make sure you have your teams in place before you start treatment. If not, it’s never too late to start gathering them. Ask your care team if you have problems finding a support group. None of us make this journey alone!

A fantastic example of teamwork is evident in our book “A Path in the Storm.” The book is short enough for those days when your attention span isn’t the greatest and provides some encouraging thoughts.
