Rebuilding from old foundations

Rebuilding

Rebuilding is what happens when we’ve been torn down by our chemo treatment and have to find a way to start over. We start from the foundation of our lives pre-chemo, and build a new version of ourselves with the modifications necessary to keep our cancers at bay.

Of course, we all want something as close to the lives we had before. Even your care team is likely rooting for that outcome. Rebuilding doesn’t always work that way, though. We can’t predict what chemo is going to leave behind. There may be changes to our bodies that force us to reconsider how we live.

For example, we may not have the energy we once did. Those who had busy lives before chemo may find themselves having to adjust to a flexible and sedentary life that is opposite what they were accustomed to.

Rebuilding looks different for everyone. Don’t go hard on yourself if your new life looks different than what you were hoping for. Celebrate small victories. Just surviving chemo is a big win!
